A Special Note: Wild Duck Adult RV Park and Campground
Wild Duck Adult RV Park & Campground holds a special place in my heart. We really enjoyed our stay here during a trip to the Maine coast. For quiet lovers like us, we prefer campgrounds like Wild Duck that are smaller and without the frills and noise of busier campgrounds.

A Special Note: Winslow Memorial Park and Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping
I love the location of both Winslow and Wolfe’s Neck Campground.
Winslow sits right on Casco Bay and offers a small public beach.
Wolfe’s Neck Campground is minutes from Wolfe’s Neck Woods State Park, one of my favorite state parks in Maine. Both locations offer spectacular views of Casco bay!
How Many Days Do You Need in Greater Portland, Maine?
You could easily spend a few weeks just exploring the Portland, Maine area. I suggest planning at least 3 nights but stay as long as you can.
If you have time to extend your trip in Maine, consider spending a few days around Portland then heading up the coast for another few days.

Is Portland, Maine is Good Camping Destination?
Choosing whether you should camp near Portland, Maine is subjective for each person. In general, there are more camping options in other areas of Maine such as Southern Maine or near Bar Harbor.
However, if you are wanting to enjoy Maine’s best city, then there are plenty of options to choose from.
Two caveats to RVing or camping near Portland, Maine: #1 is the type of facilities available and #2 is the number of options.

You’ll see from the list below that there are mostly family-owned and smaller campgrounds versus the larger commercial campgrounds you’ll see in southern Maine.
And secondly, with only 9 decent options, that doesn’t leave a ton of options.
I’m confident you’ll be able to find a campground that fits your needs but in case you don’t, consider staying in southern Maine and visiting Portland for the day.
Best Time of Year to Visit Maine
The campgrounds below are typically open from May to October, which corresponds to Maine’s best weather season.
For those looking for a less crowded experience, consider visiting in May or September.
Late September and October will draw in the leaf peepers hoping to get a glimpse of New England’s beautiful foliage.
The month of June is less crowded but can be slightly buggy – bring your bugspray!
July and August in Maine are the busiest months and typically the most expensive time to visit.
How I Plan My Camping Trips
There is one tool I highly recommend for planning your trip to Southern Maine and that’s RV Life Trip Wizard!
I have been using this tool for years and it’s my favorite way to plan RV trips because it allows me to plan each day, know the distance between destinations, and make notes about each stay.
